Gilmore Girls Anniversary

To celebrate the anniversary of Gilmore Girls we're taking a look back at our top five favourite moments from the iconic show

Gilmore Girls has always held a special place in our hearts and on October 5, 2023, we celebrate twenty-three years since its first debut.

Set in a storybook Connecticut town populated with an eclectic mix of everyday folks, Gilmore Girls is a humorous multigenerational series about friendship, family and the ties that bind. Thirty-something Lorelai Gilmore has made her share of mistakes in life, but she has been doing her best to see that her college-age daughter, and best friend in the world, Rory, doesn't follow in her footsteps. That may be easier said than done, considering that the two share the same interests, the same intellect, the same coffee addiction, and the same eyes.

In honour of this lovable show's anniversary, we want to share some of our top five favourite moments, spanning all seven of its seasons. So, whether you've never watched an episode, or you're a pledged Stars Hollow junkie, join us in revisiting some of its most iconic moments.

(Warning there will be spoilers!)

1. Rory graduates from Chilton

Season 3, Epsiode 22: 'Those are Strings, Pinocchio'
Alexis Bledel as Rory Gilmore in a graduation cap and gown

This heartfelt episode follows Rory as she graduates from Chilton and finishes her high school career. What makes this moment particularly meaningful is Rory's valedictorian speech dedicated to her mother, making everyone tear up, including Luke!

2. Rory and Richard's golf outing

Season 1, Episode 3: 'Kill Me Now'

Putting Rory's questionable outfit aside...this warm moment displayed the start of Richard and Rory's heart-warming relationship and therefore had to be included in our favourite moments. Although Rory was hesitant at first, this outing with her grandfather solidified their close bond and made her realise just how much in common she and Richard share.

3. Rory and Dean's first kiss

Season 1, Episode 7: 'Kiss and Tell'
Rory and Dean walking around Stars Hollow
Who can forget Rory and Dean's awkward first kiss? Rory was mortified after she thanked Dean and ran away when he bent down to kiss her in the middle of Doose's market. Although this left viewers with a strong sense of second-hand embarrassment, this scene marked the beginning of their blossoming relationship and is now a moment that lives rent free in all our minds!

4. Rory moves to Yale

Season 4, Episode 2: 'The Lorelais's First Day at Yale'
Rory and Lorelai embracing
This episode definitely tugs at the heart strings as we see Rory move out of her house in cosy Stars Hollow and embark on a new adventure at Yale. Rory and Lorelai as a mother-daughter duo are known to be inseparable so to see these two characters living apart for the first time was strange for fans. However, seeing Rory finally move to university was exciting and led to some great new storylines and characters.

5. Luke and Lorelai get engaged

Season 5, Episode 22: 'A House Is Not A Home'

Whilst admittedly this episode comes with a mixed bag of emotions, with Rory deciding to drop out of Yale and move into her grandparents' house, this episode also sees Lorelai propose to fan-favourite, Luke. Their undeniable connection was seen from the very start of the first season, making this moment so gratifying and special for viewers as they finally commit to one another.
