During the height of the Cold War, the unpopular President of the United States (Fredric March) sponsors a treaty with the Soviet Union. But a popular, right-wing general (Burt Lancaster), believing that the President's plan will destroy the United States, plots a coup to overthrow the government. Now, with Congress in recess, the vice-president out of the country and the military supporting the treasonous general, the President has only a short time to save American democracy--only Seven Days in May.
